Cabbage Rolls #2

  • 1 lg Cabbage
  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 lg Onion; diced
  • 2 cn Stewed tomatoes
  • 1/2 c Instant rice; optional
  • 2/3 c Tomato sauce; (only if using rice)
  • 2 ts Brown sugar
  • 1/2 ts Carraway seeds
  • Salt and pepper; (to taste)
  • 2 cn Saurkraut


Cover whole head of cabbage with plastic wrap and microwave on high 5 minutes or until outer leaves are pliable. Let stand for 5 minutes and remove 8 large outer leaves. Brown ground beef and onion. Add salt, pepper & brown sugar. Add rice and 2/3 cup tomato sauce (if using). Put saurkraut in bottom of large pot. Place 1/3 cup ground beef mixture in each cabbage leaf and roll up by folding opposite edges of leaf over meat mixture ald folling up. Place rolls on top of saurkraut. Cover with canned stewed tomatoes and sprinkle with carraway seeds. Cook on medium about 30-40 minutes or until leaves are tender.
NOTES : Can also be microwaved by putting in a microwave dish and covering with plastic wrap. Microwave on High 8-10 minutes or until heated through and cabbage is tender. Recipe by: Brenda Shreve
